Medical procedures or injections can be accompanied by unnecessary tension and discomfort. The fear of pain from a needle prick is a common concern for both children and adults, which can lead to stressful moments at the doctor's or in the hospital. Emla plasters offer a reliable solution by locally numbing the skin in a responsible manner, so that the focus can be on the treatment instead of the pain.
- Effectively numbs the skin surface, ensuring you or your child feels no pain during the insertion of a needle.
- Easy-to-apply plaster form that stays exactly in the desired spot for targeted action.
- Suitable for the whole family, with specific dosage guidelines for babies, children, and adults.
- Supports a calm experience during minor skin operations by temporarily removing skin sensitivity.
How it works
Emla plasters use a combination of two local anaesthetics: lidocaine and prilocaine. These substances penetrate the skin layers to temporarily block the nerves from pain signals. While pain receptors are switched off, sensitivity to pressure and touch often remains present. This ensures a controlled anaesthesia that is ideal for preparation for short-term medical procedures.

Use & Dosage
Use on the skin prior to minor procedures (such as the insertion of a needle or minor skin operations): Application time: approximately 1 hour. - Newborns and infants aged 0-2 months: Apply one plaster to the skin where necessary. Application time: no longer than 1 hour. Only a single dose may be given per 24 hours. The size of the plaster makes it less suitable for use on certain body parts in newborns and infants. - Infants aged 3-11 months: Apply up to two plasters to the skin where necessary. Application time: approximately 1 hour. - Children aged 1-5 years: Apply up to 10 plasters to the skin where necessary. Application time: approximately 1 hour, maximum 5 hours. - Children aged 6-11 years: Apply up to 20 plasters to the skin where necessary. Application time: approximately 1 hour, maximum 5 hours. The maximum dosage that may be given to infants and children from the age of 3 months is two doses (as described above) per 24 hours, with a period of at least 12 hours between one dose and the other. This medicine can be used in children with a skin condition called “atopic dermatitis”, but the application time is then 30 minutes, no longer. The plaster must not be cut or divided into smaller pieces. Read the patient information leaflet before use.
