Vitakruid SleepComplex incl. Valerian Magnesium BisglycinateNutrition and sleep
Melatonin plays an important role in falling asleep. This hormone regulates our circadian rhythm; during the day there is light and melatonin production is suppressed, in the evening (from the pineal gland in the brain) melatonin production starts. Our body produces most of its own melatonin; the contribution from food is minor.
The sleep hormone can also be produced from tryptophan. The body converts tryptophan into 5-HTP, which in turn changes into serotonin. Serotonin can then be converted into melatonin. Various cofactors are required for this conversion process, such as magnesium, B vitamins, zinc, calcium and amino acids. Foods rich in tryptophan usually also contain these supporting substances. Melatonin is not included in SleepComplex, by the way.
Food with a positive influence on sleep:
- Tryptophan-rich foods such as turkey, chicken, eggs, fish, dairy, walnuts, seeds, legumes, bananas, pineapple, pumpkin, spinach and oatmeal.
- Sleep tea brewed from herbs such as valerian, hops, chamomile, passion flower, lavender and lemon balm.
Food with a negative influence on sleep:
- Caffeinated products such as coffee, black/white/green tea, energy drinks and chocolate.
- Alcohol
- Sugary food
- Spiced and or spicy food
- E621 or MSG
- Eating too late in the evening (2-3 hours before bedtime)
In addition, lifestyle changes can contribute to good sleep hygiene. For example, it is important to maintain a regular sleep rhythm, create a dark and quiet bedroom, and limit the use of screens in the evening hours. SleepComplex can be an extra helping hand alongside a good lifestyle and healthy diet.
A base of herbs
Valerian, passion flower, lemon balm and green tea form the heart of SleepComplex. Griffonia simplicifolia – also known as sleep herb – is an African plant that naturally contains a high concentration of 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP). This 5-HTP is the converted form of the essential amino acid tryptophan. The substance acts as an intermediate step in the development of tryptophan to serotonin. 5-HTP serves as a building block for serotonin and is therefore a precursor to melatonin.
Highly absorbable magnesium bisglycinate
Magnesium is a mineral that is beneficial for a good mental balance and contributes to fitness. This makes it a valuable addition to the herbs in SleepComplex. In magnesium bisglycinate, the mineral is bound to two molecules of glycine, resulting in an amino acid chelated form. This structure is so robust that the mineral reaches the intestines intact and can be fully absorbed there.
Safe form of vitamin B6
SleepComplex includes vitamin B6 in the biologically active form of pyridoxal-5-phosphate (P-5-P). There are currently no known side effects attributable to this form based on recent scientific research. Furthermore, the dosage of vitamin B6 in SleepComplex (1 mg) is far below the maximum safe daily dosage (21 mg). Magnesium requires vitamin B6 to be absorbed into the cells.
Folate helps absorption of magnesium and B12
Folate (5-MTHF) is the biologically active form of folic acid and is therefore better absorbed. Moreover, it enhances the absorption of both magnesium and vitamin B12. SleepComplex contains the vitamin B12 form methylcobalamin, a biologically active form that no longer needs to be converted in the body.
